ABOUT THE INVESTMENT OFFICE

George Washington University's Investment Office manages the university's Unitized Endowment Pool , which represents the majority of GW's Endowment, under the guidance and oversight of the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees.

The Chief Investment Officer and his staff are responsible for developing strategies to enhance returns and mitigate risk of the Unitized Endowment portfolio; selecting investments and investment managers to implement these strategies; and monitoring portfolio performance and risks.  Prudent management ensures that GW's Endowment maintains its purchasing power in perpetuity while generating a stable stream of income to support scholarships, teaching, research and other activities.

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, the Unitized Endowment Pool returned 19.64 percent net of investment management fees and spending, compared to a 24.06 percent return for the composite benchmark.  Over the past five years, the Unitized Endowment Pool has returned 3.95 percent annualized, compared to the benchmark return of 5.72 percent. 

As of June 30, 2011, the market value of the Unitized Endowment Pool was $847 million.  GW's total Endowment assets were $1.331 billion.
