George Washington University's Investment Office manages the university's Pooled Endowment, which represents the majority of GW's Endowment, under the guidance and oversight of the GW Board of Trustees, Committee on Investments.
The Chief Investment Officer and his staff are responsible for developing strategies to enhance returns and mitigate risk of the Pooled Endowment portfolio; selecting investments and investment managers to implement these strategies; and monitoring portfolio performance and risks. Prudent management ensures that GW's Endowment maintains its purchasing power in perpetuity while generating a stable stream of income to support scholarships, teaching, research and other activities.
In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, the Pooled Endowment returned 9.85 percent net of investment management fees, compared to a 13.55 percent return for the composite benchmark. Over the past five years, the Pooled Endowment has returned 1.95 percent annualized, compared to the benchmark return of 5.44 percent.
As of June 30, 2013, the market value of the Pooled Endowment was $821.4 million. GW's total Endowment assets were $1.375 billion.
