Spending

The University's Board of Trustees establishes a spending policy that determines how endowment distributions are made. The spending policy is designed to balance current and future spending requirements by ensuring that a portion of investment return is distributed for current expenditure with the remainder reinvested to shield against inflation and increase the base from which future spending is made.  Currently, spending increases are capped by the change in CPI for the Washington, DC metro area.

In 2011, nearly $64 million was distributed for the benefit of Endowment programs and accounted for approximately 7.2 percent of the University's operating expenses.
